Support Our Half Marathon Team and Youth Counselling Services
We are excited to announce that a group of our dedicated team will be running a half marathon in September to raise funds for our youth counselling services at Off the Record. This fundraiser is more than just a run; it's a testament to the power of community, exercise, and the collective effort to support the mental health and wellbeing of young people in our borough.
The Importance of Exercise for Wellbeing and Mental Health
Running a half marathon is no small feat. It requires dedication and many hours of training. But beyond the physical challenge, marathon training offers incredible benefits for mental health.
Regular exercise, such as running, has been shown to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, improve mood, and boost overall mental resilience.
For our team, this half marathon is not just about crossing the finish line; it's about embodying the principles of physical and mental wellbeing that we strive to impart to the young people we support.
Our Half Marathon Team
Our running team comprise of four passionate people including staff, trustees and volunteers who work tirelessly providing life-saving support and counselling to at-risk young people. Their commitment to running this half marathon is a reflection of their dedication to our charity's mission in providing free, independent counselling to young people across Croydon, Merton and Sutton.
We caught up with Ben Randall, a volunteer trustee, who gives his time to sit on the Trustee Board to help support our organisation with his experience and expertise. Here, Ben tells us a little more about his training and the benefits of running.
As a seasoned runner Ben says: “I love running and wanted to support the team and the organisation by strapping on the trainers and joining the fun!”
On exercise and how it can help wellbeing, Ben adds: “I run a lot, it might sound odd to people who don't like running but it is mindfulness time for me - I find it helps me switch off and process things! I find exercise in general to be great for my mindfulness and wellbeing.”
The only training issue so far for Ben: “…the variable British summer!”
“I’m proud to support Off the Record. It’s a really amazing team that do the incredible work in this space, as a trustee I just hope that I can make some small contribution to helping support the organisation in its incredible work,” says Ben.
